Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

In other news, the new year has seen a steady stream of new DJs and traffic on the site has been climbing faster than anticipated. We’ve been staying one step ahead in terms of keeping things running, but it’s beginning to tax our current hardware.

The next few weeks has the development team (@yan and myself) laser-focused on preparing the site for a major announcement which we expect to bring quite a few new blippers (as well as bring a little iJoy to you mobile DJs who need a little Blip.fm iFix on the iGo).

So as we upgrade the infrastructure and code base there might be a few scheduled outages. We’ll stay up long hours late at night to make sure anything drastic happens while the sane people are fast asleep dreaming about their perfect Blip (you know, that one perfect blip that brings in the max three props from every listener—but I digress).

The projected outcome from all of this is that the site will be able to withstand huge spikes in traffic with nary a regard. What you’ll be able to notice after we’re all done is that the site will load faster and feel snappier, something that’ll be welcome to everyone.

Keep an eye out here for more updates on progress.

iCan’t iWait.

@clemens: Don’t worry, Blip.fm is just fine. I think it’s a bit of the telephone game going on at GigaOM. Blip.fm has more resources than ever going into building a great site.

Fabulous news! Oh, the possibilities of mobile blipping…gives a whole new dimension to the blip&beers. Looking forward to hearing what’s planned.

It seems my home folder has not updated since last night. just checking to see if this is an current issue due to site clean-up. Also are new listener being added to peoples charts, I keep seeing new listener emails but it seems my count does not change.

The site is great, keep up the great work! Looking forward to the new adds. Have a Great one.

@melodyofyourlife: There was a snag in the database replication, it’s catching up now. Also the stats bug has been fixed in development and should be pushed live on Monday. Your stats should “reset” every 24hrs in the meantime.

scheduled outage right now? blip-fans @twitter quite curious - good luck.

melodyofyourlife  on February 13th, 2009

@fuzzygroove thanks for the update. it only seems/seemed to happen when I went into my home folder once in a while, a bit weird thought I would share. You guys do an excellent job! Next time there is a Blip n’ Beer I will figure out a way to buy you all a round or two!

doh! I’m dying…Blip went Blap! Help me.

fuzzygroove  on February 13th, 2009

Sorry guys. We’re working on some database software upgrades. But it wouldn’t be a Friday witout a little Blip Blap!!

Today I tried to enter in Blip and it doesn’t work.
What is the problem? the server?

NMB  on February 14th, 2009

Wouldn’t it be more prudent to work on upgrades on a dev server first? Or if you are, to get it working before going live. From the outside it’s all been a bit of a mess since I rediscovered Blip.fm last night; it all seems a bit unprofessional. Here’s hoping you get things back on track soon.

Thanks for all the hard work your team is doing–also looking forward to using this site on my mobile device!!

fuzzygroove  on February 16th, 2009

@NMB: We do have a habit of checking everything on a staging server before we push live. But in this case it was a problem that only manifested on the production servers. We got things fixed as soon as we could, thanks for hanging in there.

On a good note, things have been humming along much faster since the updates. We also have more hardware coming to increase performance even further. I’ll try to give as much notice about maintenance windows as possible.

Thanks for your patience while we shine things up!

You know what would be really nice? A way to delete several blips from our playlists at the same time instead of doing it one at a time. When I first started here, I pretty much playlisted everything I blipped because I really LOVE music. However, it’s become rather cumbersome and slow when Im on that page. I’d love to be able to clean that page up without it taking hours, days, weeks, months to do it!

Another neat feature would be to adjust that player you can put on your web pages to show what you’re blipping so it scrolls and posts it in live time instead of the readers on our personal pages having to refresh after every song….
