Disturbance in the force
UPDATE 2:21 PST
And we’re back. We’ll get to detail later and just want to keep an eye on things for a while.
UPDATE 8:42 PST
First off, thanks for the patience. Been a long day for us here. The good news is that we’re on the path to recovery. The bad news is it’s still going to be a bit more time. We’ll give a more detailed breakdown once we’re back.
UPDATE 2:26 PST
We’ve discovered a number of data inconsistencies we’re working through at the moment. The site should be back up later this evening once we’ve reconciled what we can. Thanks
- Yan

so sad. i need music in my brain!

I am sure that rather than spending time articulating what they are working on at the moment, they are spending this time working out the problem.
spreiselbeerle on September 26th, 2009
Thanx Yan for the info. d;.p

So is this your regular error message in this screenshot (linked below), or was this a hacking?

Yan on September 26th, 2009
@jenhintz yes that’s our normal 500 page - meant to be a joke obviously.

Your error page is made of awesome. Scared the crap out of me at first, and then I laughed my fanny off. Well done.
Hope you’re back online soon. I want my, I want my, I want my blip.fm.
myownghost on September 26th, 2009
That 505 error page was the funniest thing I’d seen in a long time. I particularly loved the snack break!
Btw, thank you for such a pleasurable site.
DukeMcdonald on September 26th, 2009
How dare the team that brings us this free service not communicate with us every second. The owner of this free service should give us our money back!
DTM on September 26th, 2009
Thanks for the info Yan. The error age is 10/10. Hope to see Blip.fm back up and running soon!

So, is there any place similar to blip.fm?
pokhadot87 on September 26th, 2009
hmm, people already bailing out and looking for other services, tough crowd
Smile86 on September 26th, 2009
I’m sooooooo bored without blip, I want a job at the Blip.fm offices. But then I’d have to quite my band. Get it working or send me a prescription for Methadone!!!!

At last, I understand… I’m addicted!!!
ContactDaveL on September 26th, 2009
I really do understand the frustration out there. I was looking forward to blipping as all of you.
It is unfortunate that technology in this context is quite vulnerable to a number of situations, and scenarios. Things happen, and that is not a reflection of how the service should be judged.
The purveyors of this service responded, and are continuing their response on a Saturday night.
The response at times like this is a gigantic factor in judging service.
Thanks for a great service, blip.fm! Keep up the good work, and we’ll catch you when all is ready to go, again.
@briangreene on September 26th, 2009
To put the record straight as I see it and blip.fm can speak for itself. it wasn’t 18hrs w/o communication on the problem. It was 8hrs down when communication happened. Blip went down at 00.07 PST in my estimation and into the weekend it was the wee hours of Saturday morning. 8 overnight hours. So hats off to blip team for getting on the case so fast. I am not trying to spin a bad situation good. 8hrs response delay at the weekend is not bad.
The other thing I notice here and the tweets that are flying around. The anger over the outage is proportional to the love/addiction that people have for the platform. I can only see good in this. For all blips outages and Feb 14 2009 was a bad day too, it is nowhere near the fail whale days of twitter.
So guys, stability over availability - when you’re ready with the best social music platform on the web, lets us back on to play tunes to our friends. we love you blip.fm

I sense the force is strong with this one. My withdraws are duely noted in your reply email. BY THE POWER OF GREY SKULL you shall win this battle.
Fazio on September 26th, 2009
Blip has the coolest error message on the Internet. That was probably the first time I laughed when a site I like is down.
Maybe the guy who made the error page wanted to show his creation and sabotaged the server.
DJLesPaulGuitar on September 26th, 2009
I hope it gets fixed soon i really want to listen to my music lol
BoxerDogsOK on September 26th, 2009
I wish they would give an update, it has been over 6 hours without an update.
ImperfectFit on September 26th, 2009
Listeningtoo.com kinda sucks… it’s not the same. I want my blip back!!! A really great place for music is pandora, it’s a giant music experiment!
Jaye Valentine on September 26th, 2009
I’m listening to “Barbie Girl” by Aqua looped on my iTunes until this problem is resolved.
Verily, that should be enough heaping guilt to encourage the blip.fm techies to think faster.
misterscience on September 26th, 2009
@briangreene said it! Thx to blipteam for the service: this really is the best social music site out there
wanbaclone on September 26th, 2009
That error message is (almost) worth the outage.
djwttw on September 26th, 2009
yes yea yes !!!

Being an internet professional for 12+ years, I feel for the Blip.fm team. Although I’ve never had an outage this long, I have been through servers moves where we had situations with servers that were beginning to have hard drive failure & we had to move everyone to new servers within hours *Not Fun*!
Knowing what type of work goes into a service like Blip, despite my new less than 2 month old addiction, I will have patience & hope everyone else will too ![]()
Cora on September 26th, 2009
Wah! My fave site. You r so missed. You break mah hearts with your absence but still I luffs you anyway. Plz be well & I hope you’re back online soon.

Blip is amazing. I have felt indebted to these guys for offering such a stellar service ! A music fanatics dreamworld in my opinion ! I think it is crazy how much BLIP is part of my life on a daily basis, very cool and kind of scary at the same time. Ha ! Cheers to the Blip team and thanks again for all your hard work!
This is the raddest community of people on the internet !
All the love

i heart blip.fm therefore i will wait.
i am now worried about the health and well being of the blip team working on the issues as this is an unusually long period of time for the site to be down. thank you for losing your weekend, social life and sleep to fixing blip to feed our addictions.
i will now be less annoying.
get well soon. ![]()

Good work guys…and thanks.
@avivamagnolia on September 27th, 2009
Thank you! Thank you again! Blip.fm has always been incomparable, in my book. There’s no other service like it. Long live Blip.fm (and the guys who keep it alive)!
@avivamagnolia on September 27th, 2009
I have to confess; I was totally worried that I’d lose my >800-page playlist (full of obscure tracks).
I think I’m still traumatized by the abrupt death of Ma.gnolia, I’d spent vast hours creating groups, archives, connections…vanished! Forever…
8 hours without a ‘peep’ from Blip.fm triggered my fears. And of course, all is well–thanks to quick action by Yan, et al.
Muchas gracias por todo!
@BBlanca on September 27th, 2009
Thank you very much indeed for everything to commentators & support@blip.fm: Daniel T., Yan, etc…
Kisses…
MusicIsMySoul on September 27th, 2009
I have no idea how the tech team works for blip.fm but I can tell you with my small business that when I’m in the middle of fixing an issue and the phone continually rings, I have it go straight to voicemail.
I too, am glad that Yan posted something, but I think because of what I do, my anxiety level over blip’s downtime was probably less than most. You can spend time answering questions about “what is wrong” or you can “fix” what’s wrong…good job guys and thank you for providing such an awesome free service that feeds my music fanaticism & soul ![]()
