Dial It In

Tonight we release a few much-anticipated updates to the Blip.fm community. Bear with us as we get the servers ready for world domination. While you’re waiting for the site to open back up, the following will give you a little rundown of what we’re doing right now. BUT: Because I completely forgot to write this blog entry before scheduling the update, I’m going to give you one feature at a time, while simultaneously running update scripts and checking for last-minute bugs. Yes, I’m that good. I hope.

1) The Fabled TagTuner
Fabled you say? I just looked it up in the dictionary widget, and a “fable” a short story with animals and a moral. So I guess it’s not really “fabled”, but more like just “awesome”. Right, so, the TagTuner will debut on the “All DJs” page (http://blip.fm/all), allowing you to filter the overwhelming stream of blips by any combination of artist, genres, and hashtags (those #special #keywords like on Twitter). You can save tag presets for easy access, and easily select whichever one you want. This is huge because it lets you discover both new DJs and new music based on your
criteria, and you can change it up to fit your mood.

2) Achievement Badges
At Blip.fm being an active blipper is a very good thing, and we think you should be rewarded for your time spent avoiding the pile of work on your desk. That’s why we’ve come up with an initial set of–hang on, let me count them. Twelve?–12 Badges. Some of them are pretty easy to earn… for level one anyway. Most have at least three ranks you can achieve, and you can read all about how to get the full set of them. We’ll be adding more as we think of them, so don’t think this is the end of it! The icons were created by a badass designer out of Brazil, Everaldo Coelho with Yellow Icon Studios.

For those of you who helped us beta test these new features, we’ve given you a special “beta tester” badge. There’s also one only for those of you who were using Blip.fm back in the early days, back when we were just getting started. Thanks for that.

3) Quick Add/Props
This is a power user feature that has been requested for a while now. Instead of having to go to a DJ’s profile page to add them as a favorite or give props, just roll over any user icon in the blipstream. You’ll see a little bubble menu pop up that gives quick access to the two most often used user actions. Hopefully you’ll stop emailing us about this now. Just kidding, we love you.

4) Block DJ
Ditch the stalkers. ‘Nuff said. OK, a little more could be said. You block them by going to their profile page, and selecting “Block User” from the actions menu (at the bottom right of the info box containing the user info. It has a gear icon on it. You can’t miss it).

5) Weekly Update Emails
We’ll let you know all about what’s been going down at Blip.fm as it pertains to you. We send a condensed weekly email containing the total number of props you’ve received, including the people who sent you the most props, your latest listeners and what they blipped, and the top five blipped tracks of the week. There might be some more stuff in it too, but I forget what it is right now.

6) Better Facebook
We’ve slightly modified the Facebook integration to include the YouTube video or embed a little player whenever possible, so you can hear the song right in your Facebook feed. We figure it’s a helluva lot cooler to be able to hear the music right away. We think you’ll think so too.

There’s probably a few more things in there. We’ve definitely sped up the page load a bit, and fixed a few bugs in the process. The next update to this blog entry will be to let you know that the site is back online. Right now we’re just waiting for all the blips to be processed for the new artist/genre/hash tagging system and we’ll be back. Something like 1.5 million blips in the last couple weeks left to process. Not bad guys.

We heart you.

UPDATE: We’re live again :) Sorry to make you wait so long. The TagTuner will get better with age, so start blipping now and blip often!

Great idea with the tag filtering! Love Blip.fm!

ZOEBOE  on January 19th, 2010

Thanks for your hard work, so we can play =) The new badges are NEAT-O!

rock2monster  on January 19th, 2010

~…the badges have nothing to do with music nor the people that enjoy it…it does however further separate people that truly love music/have worked in the field or would rather not play idiot games while enjoying the company of friends/new & not so new…
believe it or not, not all music-freaks love gimmicks…i for one would rather not play such games/my time is too important…~

Ian White  on January 19th, 2010

Thanks for the words guys!

rock2monster: The best part of the badges is you can ignore them completely. And chances are, if you have worked in the field and love sharing good music, you’ll get them anyway. It’s a win win!

Blip_Wilson  on January 19th, 2010

Tags are nice, but I must admit the badges are quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve seen in some time. This isn’t XBox Live here.

I will echo rock2monster’s statement somewhat, with this addition: The badges promote elitism to the fullest, as if Blip isn’t clique-y enough as it is already. Why allow some user who just happened to stumble onto Blip earlier than someone else feel superior with some tag?

I understand you want to thank those who have been around since the early days, but why on earth does everyone need some sort of accolade they can show off? Isn’t a simple thank you good enough for people anymore?

Somehow you’ve managed to alienate and separate the community even more than the users have done on their own.

Nice job. :P

chez_del  on January 20th, 2010

i think the new updates are worth the wait - i tested the beta version the past few weeks and really enjoyed it. the tag-tuner isn’t fabled, it isn’t awesome - it rocks!
the “badges” could look better, though.

best wishes for the future!

smimarchie  on January 20th, 2010

I wasn’t aware I was part of ‘the community’ with @Blip_Wilson anyway, but badges aren’t going to don’t seem likely to alter my experience all that much.

They might make me blip more, rate more and discover more - maybe. But that will put me in touch with more people and get me more followers - that’s how it works. Badges drive participation, and participation is what builds community.

The only thing that separates and alienates whatver community there is is reading stupid half-assed opinions like the ones expressed above - particularly when accompanied by pompous rubbish like ‘people who love music/have worked in the field’.

Ya, people on Blip don’t love music.
They’re here to play games.

If you don’t like badges, don’t use them - but the success of the site will depend on more usage and more connectivity, so why don’t you wait and see what it’s effects are before it gets damned as community splitting because… wait, why will is it community splitting again? Oh yes, because I don’t like them. And I like music more than you, apparently.

AnotherBlipperInTokyo  on January 20th, 2010

I basically second smimarchie, though I hope he could have put it in a milder way.

I’m going to ignore the badges by pushing [-] button, but if anybody else cares, what’s the problem? Is that going to “divide” the “community”? Is that something that leads to “elitism”? No, I don’t think so. Come on, blip.fm is only music sharing website that people use for fun.

BTW, it would be handy if you could make it like this: once a user pushes the ignore-badges button (that [-] one) on his/her own page, the setting applies to other users. (I’m sorry for my poor and lengthy English.)

Thanks, Ian and everybody at blip.fm. You’ve made my life a bit more noisy. :)

MackONE  on January 20th, 2010

I know you get this question a lot, but when will musicians and artists get to upload their own original material?

I really love this site! It allows me to post the right song to match my moods quickly! Thank you!

AWESOME !! __/\/\___/\____________

randyhate  on January 20th, 2010

please let me turn off getting badge updates in my email.

the badges are a pestilence i would rather ignore. that they keep popping up in my email makes this rather hard to do.

sandman5  on January 20th, 2010

Thanks for the updates. However, I can’t seem to currently use the re-blip function. I click on the widget/icon and nothing happens…

brutalbrian  on January 20th, 2010

Can’t get last.fm status to authorize. Any reasons?

BeamonMusic  on January 21st, 2010

I think the badges are neat, but it sure would be nice to know what song you got them for… especially if you get the pioneer badge. But also for the Tastemaker, Hot Streak and Big Spender badges.

I also really would like to have a list with songs that I have given props out for. Therefor it’s only stuff I really like even if it is stuff I just have discovered with other blippers…

Thanks for considering my ideas!

mysticalchicken  on January 21st, 2010

I just have to say that it seems like it would be next to impossible to earn the “Pioneer” badge (blip a particular song before ANY other DJ does) unless you were ~extremely~ lucky, or psychic.

befraifone  on January 21st, 2010

I like the new changes. The badges are nice and appeal to the homo ludens, and if you don’t care about this fancy stuff you may minimize the box.

One problem: since the updates I’m not able to use some of my beloved search string options anymore, such as the quotation marks for exact string matching or the “+”. Thus the search results are far too fuzzy at the moment.

befraifone  on January 21st, 2010

… whoosh! Obviously the issue got fixed while I typed, or I’ve been just too stupid. Never mind.

CD  on January 21st, 2010

mysticalchicken: I guess that depends on how you consume music and what kind of music you’re listening to… if you like “contemporary” music it’s not difficult at all to follow music blogs and new releases and be first at blippin’ some songs/remakes/remixes/mashups and so on. Especially not since you can hotlink files from the web (Youtube for example), if you want to, and not only use blip.fm to search for music to blip. I do it more or less by accident every day if I see anything interesting, I still haven’t earned the badge though cause they’re not working when you blip from an external application… I guess that’s a little bit of what the name “pioneer” means and not just someone who happened to be the first to blip a Radiohead or Beatles song.

mysticalchicken  on January 23rd, 2010

@CD ha ha, yeah, I actually got the Pioneer badge the next night after I posted that by blipping a YouTube video. So anyway.

In general: is there a limit to how many tags you can have on the Tag Tuner? ‘Cause I just added a bunch of new tags (mostly artists) and now the All DJs blip stream won’t load at all for me. Favorite DJs and my own page load perfectly fine.

mysticalchicken  on January 23rd, 2010

oh and I should add that the All DJs blipstream does load fine if I don’t turn on my Tag Tuner but it won’t load if I do.

LizzieLiz  on January 25th, 2010

Question: how do you add a new song that you cannot find on Blip? I’ve tried doing it through the settings tab (I’ve put in a link to a Youtube video), but it won’t work…..Anyone know?

AnotherBlipperInTokyo  on January 25th, 2010

Put the YouTube video’s URL (or any other ‘.mp3′ URL) into the search bar (’What song do you want to Blip?’), push ’search’ and voila! :)

Or ’settings’ -> ‘music’ -> ‘enter song URL’. However this fails when the ID3 tag is not readable.

onestarleft  on January 28th, 2010

Adore the badges. Seems like a great way to keep people coming back.

There are two things I wouldn’t mind seeing in the future. One, I’d love to be able to search and NEVER see a video. I can already skip them in the playlists, so why not skip them in searches too? Two, I really really miss my delete button. Mistakes happen, misclicks and so on. To not be able to delete a blip seems odd.

punched  on January 29th, 2010

I love everything about BLiP.FM, will it be available as an app on the android market anytime soon?

Thanx :)

MysticalChicken  on February 1st, 2010

@onestarleft You can still delete blips, just click the little gearbox-looking thing when you scroll over an individual blip and a menu will pop up that gives you an option to delete it.

AnotherBlipperInTokyo  on February 3rd, 2010

Just type “-youtube” when you do the search.
